What to do with Robin van Persie

Robin van Persie had a marvellous first season at the club. His 35 goals fired us to the 20th League Title, and bagged him the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. But now, three seasons into his United career, his future in Manchester looks uncertain.

His performances over the last two seasons simply haven't lived up to the heights he reached in his first year. Many fans have suggested that his legs have gone, and that there’s no chance of him getting to the world class level we’ve seen him play at in the past.

So, what could United do with him? Some are proposing that he should be sold, others are saying that, if he’s willing, we should keep him as backup. But I’m not sure he would be happy with that at all. He seems the sort of player who loves to be the centre of attention in the team, and needs the side to be set out to play to his strengths or else he just won’t perform.

I’m not sure that he can play well if the team isn’t set up specifically for him. He’s not the sort of player who’s going to get the ball and grab the game by the scruff of the neck. He needs other players to put the work in for him, and then he’ll stick the ball in the back of the net. But he isn’t going to be the main striker at United next year, so is there any point in keeping him?

I don’t think so. Unless van Gaal does have a change of heart and decides his compatriot is the main man next year, I’d cash in while we still can. He’s getting on, at 31 years old, and if we leave it much later we’ll be lucky to be able to get any money at all for him. This is our last chance to get any return on the £24 million we paid for him back in 2012.

There are good strikers out there for us to bring in to replace van Persie, and as grateful as I’m sure everyone is to him for almost single-handedly carrying us to that 20th title, I think it’s about time to say thank you and farewell to our Dutch forward.

Should we keep van Persie, and if not who would you like to see us bring in? Let us know @ViewUnited

Here’s a list of 6 strikers we think could be brought in over the summer:
